Marshall McLuhan, Cool vs Hot Mediums
Main Post:
Trying to write something on McLuhan and having some trouble understanding cool vs hot. The section that goes over this is as follows:
Coolness of media is defined by the amount of participation by the viewer’s interaction with the medium. This term and the definition McLuhan gives it denotes some kind of quantified measurement but it is really more useful as a relative term that we can use to compare mediums, some being cooler or hotter than others. If we compare Streaming Services to some of the older forms of music mediums, we can see that streaming services are cooler. This is because of the interactive nature of it's overarching medium, the internet. In Jude Marat’s essay Touch-Starved Cyberspace Mouse-Men he states that ‘The internet is unlike any form of mass media before it in the sense that we don’t consume it, rather we engage with it...’. It is this interactivity that the internet enables for the typical user that creates a cool experience for streaming services. One can create their own album, through the construction of hours-long playlists, select and create new radio stations based on a song they frequently listen to, the tools of the streaming service not only give power to the listener but encourage that the listener interact with the service and certain features require this interaction. Algorithms can only use the interactions they are fed, without them they are blank slates, making up preferences as they go with no reinforcements or punishments to develop judgement from. This is in contrast to the hotness of radio where a listener depends on the dj for their experience and is only able to turn on and off the radio, switch channels, and adjust volume. This creates an experience that is stagnant and passive for the listener.
I just want to make sure I'm applying this concept accurately. I'd appreciate citations if anyone offers a correction.

A very cool thing the NZ media could do would be never publishing the shooter's name or photo
Main Post:
We'll get both name & photo in the next hour or so, but it'd be awesome if NZ set an example for the US (and other countries) by never publicizing the shooter's identity. Just let them die anonymously to discourage other disturbed youth from trying something similar.
In a small country like this it'll eventually become public knowledge who did it anyway, but media outlets here could at least not splash the shooter's photo & life story across their websites 4 seconds after police divulge the info.
EDIT: This might not actually be a random mass shooting. The above doesn't necessarily apply, depending on circumstances.

Did Robert get permission from Sean Moorhead for the name of Cool Zone Media?
Main Post:
If you didn’t know, the phrase originally came from a tweet by one @SeanRMoorhead. The tweet reads:
If unemployment exceeds 30% and distrust of the political process becomes widespread, there is a danger that the United States will enter what historians call The Cool Zone.
I’m just curious if Robert ever got permission from him to use that name for his network. Or is it something that’s now considered ubiquitous enough to be in the proverbial public domain?
Top Comment:
It's more of a quote, or reference. It's just two words, "cool zone". Which is used in many contexts for many different things. It is a reference to that tweet, but it's still not really grounds to have to ask for permission. It's just a meme or slang term, in the public consciousness like any phrase or idiom.

EDIT: Thanks for the support everyone! Some of you kindly pointed out mistakes and bugs already, for which I am very very grateful. I patched in a couple bugs just now and v1.0.2 should be good to install on your servers. I also set up a demo on render.com so you can play with it here: https://microbin.onrender.com. I am working on setting up a one button deploy so all of you can set up your personal MicroBins with one click.

Top Comment: Place it in a bucket of water, or run it under the tap (keeping lid dry, not much risk of contamination but still)

Marshall McLuhan - hot vs cold media?
Main Post:
Hey friends. Marshall McLuhan had this idea of separating media into "hot" vs "cold" forms of media. I've never been quite able to fully understand this distinction - for instance he classified movies and radio as "hot" media, but television as "cold". Why?
Top Comment: It would be amazing to have McLuhan around for the past 10 years to see us move from the television age to the internet age. All the chaos and changes that have occurred are fairly straightforward when you view it through his theory. Television was a centralized gatekeepers era and now we have moved into the internet era of decentralized power and free flow of information.
